This spoiler about Rodrigo Santoro came straight off Lost-Media. They have a rolling blog there that has lots of nifty info. It's a serious spoiler, so consider yourself warned.

Paulo, Rodrigo Santoro's character on Lost, came out of nowhere at the beginning of the season. Fans of Lost were supposed to accept him as a redshirt who had been around from the beginning, but from what I hear, no one did. He was rude to Desmond (!!!) and contributed nothing to his most active episode, except for the sound of a toilet flushing.
So maybe no one will be too surprised that his character will die before the end of the season. Rodrigo Santoro says he has movie commitments to keep him busy after Lost.
