Nikki and Paulo

Nikki and Paulo showed up one episode to browbeat Hurley and have made several appearances since. These characters have had some
memorable, defining moments, such as when Paulo flushed the toilet in the Pearl station.
So, just what is the point of these two characters?
They're not regulars. Officially, they're still just guest stars. In a Lost podcast, Cuse and Lindelof said their existence was contrived to trick us into thinking they would die in "Cost of Living". It didn't work, but now I hear there is another point to their existence and it will become apparent in episode fourteen (28 March 2007).
