Spinal surgeon Jack Shephard is played by Matthew Fox on Lost. The 6'2" (1.9 m) actor portrays the leader
of the castaways with force and elan peppered with wishy-washy insecurity--a very effective combination for a character as complex as Jack.
Fox turned forty last year on July 14. After growing up in Pennsylvania, where his parents raised longhorn cattle and horses, he went to school at Deerfield Academy, then Columbia University. Originally, he intended to work on Wall Street, but tried modeling on the advice of a girlfriend's mother.
He got his start in 1992 on Wings. His character lasted a single episode, but paved the way for further acting jobs, such as the television series Freshman Dorm, cancelled after a single episode, and the zombie comedy My Boyfriend's Back. Only one made-for-TV movie, If I Die Before I Wake, stood between Fox and fame on Party of Five, which lasted from 1994 until 2000.
In 1991, he married Margherita Ronchi. They have two children, Kyle, born 1998, and Byron, born 2001.
