Lost Podcast 17 Oct 2006
October 18th 2006 04:45
On the ABC web site, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have a podcast about their show Lost. In the current podcast for 17 Oct 2006, they rehash last week's episode, "The Glass Ballerina", and offer comments on this week's episode, "Further Instructions". They have a very chatty style and joke about each other and the show throughout. Sometimes it's hard to know what's a joke and what is a real comment. Since some of their comments might be spoilers and I have included them in the text below, here is your spoiler warning:
*** Spoiler ***
"The Glass Ballerina"
Damon and Carlton started with a discussion of last week's episode. "The Glass Ballerina" was an episode concentrating on Sun in the backstory. They said that the paternity of Sun's baby is still up in the air on the show and they hinted that Sun herself is not certain who the father is.
Now this comment intrigues me. Sun took that pregnancy test at day fifty-eight on the island. If they are hinting that Jae might be the father, then Sun would have been well over two months pregnant. At that point, a woman knows she is pregnant and has no need of a pregnancy test. There was also the scene in episode thirteen of season two where Charlie knocked Sun unconscious while she was alone in her garden. (Sun does not know who attacked her that day.) That occurred on day fifty-five, three days before and too soon to detect a pregnancy. Is there someone else? Or are the writers and producers utterly clueless about pregnancy?
They confirmed what many of us suspected: we don't know that Colleen is dead.
Damon and Carlton both agreed that one of their favorite scenes in all the episodes of Lost was the Red Sox scene. Apparently, they had begun shooting the series in February of 2004 and had used the line about "that's why the Red Sox will never win the series." When the Red Sox won the World Series in October of 2004, they knew they would use that in a future episode and built up the emotional connection between Jack and Christian with that line.
"Further Instructions"
"Further Instructions" will concentrate on Locke in the backstory. In this episode, the focus will return to the main group of flight 815 survivors who remained on the beach at the end of last season. They basically gave us three bits of information about tomorrow's episode. First, we will not find out why the hatch imploded. Second, we will not find out how Locke got in the wheelchair. Finally, Locke will return as the "man of the jungle".
Can't wait to see what happens...
Fan Questions
The last part of the podcast was devoted to fan questions. I wish I could say they said anything, but most of their comments were cryptic at best.
One question asked if we would see more of Shannon Rutherford. Shannon died in the second season when Ana-Lucia shot her, thinking Shannon was an Other. Carlton and Damon answered that we would probably see more of her in other people's backstories. That will be interesting if it happens (note they said "probably") because Boone died and he would have been the natural one to have Shannon in a backstory. She has shown up in Jack's backstory, when her father died of injuries from the car crash that Jack's wife, Sarah, survived. Otherwise, she was only in Boone's backstory.
Another question asked if we could expect any of the dead characters to return to life either through the magic of the island or the technology of the Others. I have to say I am so glad that Damon and Carlton both said "no" without any joking--well, except to say that they would have zombie episodes in season seven. They agreed that characters who are dead on the island will remain dead and we will only see these characters in the backstories. This puts to rest the rampant speculations that the island revived Christian Shepard when the plane crashed. We'll need to figure out another explanation for the empty coffin.
A question was asked about the progress of the people looking for the plane. "Don't trust those Others" was the only definite thing they said. They tried to be as evasive as they could be about the answer, saying things like, "We don't really know what time it is off the island." and the other producer responding, "But we do. Ben told us."
Someone asked, "Will we see a gangsta on the island?" Damon and Carlton really liked the idea, but indicated that there are no current plans to include a gangsta.
This next question made my little ears perk up. The question concerned Jack's tattoos and whether they had any connection to the Flame station that we saw on the blast door map. We will see the Flame station in season three and we will find out what those star tattoos on the underside of Jack's arm mean. They were very clear on that. Yippee!
Three more questions to go...
A question was asked about who Ben referred to as "Him" while he was captive in the Swan station. "We're assuming that Ben is talking about himself." They said some other things that were equally evasive.
Someone asked who if we would find who the "Him" was that Desmond and Kelvin were waiting for. They totally did not answer this one. I got the idea that it didn't really matter.
The final question was more of a comment. The fan asked Damon and Carlton to give Charlie and Claire more air time and a solid story. They responded that this season would show a budding romance between the two with all the twists and turns we've come to expect from Lost. They also said a love triangle similar to that of Kate, Jack, and Sawyer might develop, although it was hard to tell if they were joking about this.
There it is. The Lost podcast had a few answers, a few non-answers, and several evasions. Well worth a listen, in my opinion. I found it here.
