Lost Podcast -- 06 Nov 2006
November 7th 2006 04:16
The Lost official podcast of 6 Nov 2006 had Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse talking about "Cost of Living" and "I Do", as well as answering fan questions. No actors were interviewed this week. They'll have one more podcast after "I Do", then nothing until February, when the series returns.
They revealed their clever plan for Paulo and Nikki on the podcast. Those two were introduced so that when the ABC previews said "Someone will die this week" (meaning on "Cost of Living"), the viewers would expect Paulo or Nikki to die. It didn't work for me. I thought Eko would die. It was his episode, after all. That and last week's podcast said somebody "significant" and those two are about as useless as any nameless redshirt.
Damon and Carlton said they killed Mr. Eko because they made a deal with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje that he would only be on the show for a year. Michelle Rodriguez also made the same deal with them, but they didn't want to kill off both characters in the same season. They asked Adewale to stick around for the first part of season one and he agreed. They emphasized that Bernard is not the only tailie alive. Cindy, Emma, Zach, and the other tailies that were kidnapped are somewhere, we just don't know where they are.
What is the relevance of Yemi's body being gone from the plane (like Christian Shephard's body) and what is the significance of Yemi saying, "You speak to me as if I am your brother"? Damon and Carlton said it implies that island Yemi is not Eko's brother, and perhaps he is a manifestation of the island (but perhaps not). The monster encounter in "23rd Psalm" might have been where the monster "downloaded" information from Eko for future use.
Eko said to Locke, "You're next." This has been the source of some debate around the net, since it sounds like Eko says quite a bit more, but I suppose that could have been him gasping for breath as he was dying. The statement made by him implies that the other castaways may face a similar fate to Eko.
We also learned on "Cost of Living" that Ben comes to Jack and says the x-rays are his and he would like Jack to remove the tumor. So we are certain that Ben is the one with the tumor and that it is life-threatening, according to Damon and Carlton.
As for Juliet and the TV, what is her agenda? She wants Jack to let Ben die. She doesn't seem to be a fully indoctrinated Other. They weren't terribly illuminating on that point, since we pretty much knew that from the show.
Thirteen weeks for the hiatus and Daybreak is taking the place of Lost on the Wednesday night slot. Daybreak is awesome, they said. Go watch it. I'll try it out. It looks to be interesting.
Fan Questions
The fan question section started with a joke question about the podcast being adapted to Broadway. Quite silly.
"When are we going to see an explanation for why the Others take children and what happened to them?" Yes, we will be seeing Cindy and the kids and we will learn more about what the Others are doing with them after the hiatus, in episode eight. This upcoming episode is episode six, so that will be sometime in mid-February before we find out what happened to them.
"Does the island move? How does Eko's short-range plane go from Africa to somewhere near Australia?" They cannot reveal the answer to the question at this time. The answer will be shown on the show, but they did not say when or which season. Damon did say that the island is not on the back of a giant turtle. Helpful info there.
"Where are the doctors of the Others?" The viewer noted that doctors were in the hatch with Claire, but when Colleen died, the Others needed Jack. Carlton pointed out that people wearing surgical scrubs are not necessarily surgeons. Upcoming episodes will answer this question.
"When will we find out more about the black smoke? Is the black smoke made up of nanobots?" The black smoke is not made up of nanobots. We know that the smoke monster can physically grab people and beat them against trees. As an aside, they reconfirmed that the book club was reading Carrie.
Time on Alcatraz is coming to a conclusion and we will be returning to the beach. (My own question: Does this mean escape is imminent? Or just that the Others will move Jack, Kate, and Sawyer somewhere else?)
"Which characters would you be on the show? Which of you has the fetish for Charles Dickens and Stephen King? Will the characters be returning to the Black Rock?" Damon and Carlton said it is not a fetish, but they are aficionadoes of King and Dickens. Stephen King's book The Stand is a model for how to tell a long, sprawling book and keep it interesting. Dickens also wrote long, sprawling, serialized books with amazing character connections. Carlton would be Sawyer because he is so cool. The characters will get back to the Black Rock.
All in all, some interesting points. The confirmation that Eko did say "You're next" and nothing more was helpful. I'm glad to know the kidnapped tailies are still out there and will be returning.
I'm especially eager to see "I Do".
