Glass Ballerina: Red Sox
October 17th 2006 04:01
Christian Shepard used to say, "And that's why the Red Sox'll never win the Series" when speaking of Fate.
In season one, episode sixteen, "Outlaws", Christian says this to Sawyer when they are drinking together in the bar. Later in that same episode, Jack says the same thing to Sawyer and explains it as something his father would say to avoid responsibility for his own actions. Sawyer realizes at that moment that Christian is Jack's father, but says nothing.
In season one, episode twenty-three, "Exodus Part One" (the first part of the season finale), Sawyer is chopping down some bamboo to fix the raft when Jack seeks him out and hands him a gun. Apparently, this thoughtful act by a usually hostile fellow castaway touches Sawyer enough the he tells Jack some nice things his father said about him. This revelation brings Jack to tears.
In season three, episode two, "The Glass Ballerina", Ben shows a captive Jack the Red Sox winning the Series as proof that the Others have access to the outside world. Ostensibly, Ben is saying that the Others have the power, they have the connections, and Jack has no choice but to depend on the Others if he wants to regain his freedom.
But on another level, does this demonstrate that nothing is fated? If even the beleaguered Red Sox can win the World Series after eighty-six years of missing it, mightn't Jack and the other flight 815 survivors make it out of the clutch of the Others, and possibly even off the island?
As an Easter egg to those fans who care, Ben used one of the Numbers to describe the Red Sox winning. He said, "and then they won eight straight." Four games against the Yankees in the league championship, then four games to win the Series.
Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know your insights.

I think that it was used to show that the Others are in touch with the outside world somehow. Also, to tie in the Red Sox quotes from earlier.
I'm not sure I buy into the deeper meaning of it though. Seems almost out of reach for most everyone. But, then again you could be right Adele. It's just so hard to tell with this show.
COME ON "FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS" I'm really pumping up for the next episode.
Aaron.
PS--what are you going to do during Lost's hiatus?

No deeper meaning? You could be right. I could be reading things into the show, but that was the area of high school English I did the worst in (you know, all the layers of Huck Finn? I just did not get that.)
I already have plans to obsess over various items during the hiatus. I'll also hang out at your blog and comment on Daybreak and a few others.
Banner's not ready yet. Soon, I think.

I'm glad to see you have plans to hang out at my blog during the hiatus.
I'm also glad you're going to watch Daybreak. Because you and me may be the only ones commenting on it, who knows. It also may become a break out smash hit. Only time will tell.
But, there's still 4 more episodes before Lost goes on hiatus, so lets enjoy them while they're on. But, can you imagine 17 straight weeks of episodes of Lost next year? That's going to be so great! The reruns were something that really pissed me off last year, I'm glad they thought of this comprimise.

The way they did the reruns before seemed kind of haphazard. I remember at the time that JJ and Damon said it was ABC that made the choice when Lost would run and not them.

That's where I heard this all the way back at the end of last season.
The problem with it is that they would love to make like 35 episodes of Lost a season, but the just can't humanily do that. It's impossible. They can at most make 24. But, the TV season is like 35 weeks long. So, ABC was running the shows during peak times (SWEEPS) where the ratings count. That's when they measure the ratings so they can set their prices for commercial time. Yup it's all about those stinking commercials.
But, I think they've done a really good thing this year. I really like the idea of a mini-series up front of 6 episodes , then 17 straight until the end. When Lost is on it's on, when it's not it's not.
But, yeah go to ABC.com and watch the podcast. Last year it was only audio now it's video and audio. Also, not too many spoilers. They never say anything exteremly big.
