Locke Episode
The backstory centers on Locke
Locke's eye. He is lying in flattened reeds, his legs at an odd angle. Is he unable to walk again? The camera pans out and it's a bit reminiscent of the pilot episode when Jack wakes up. Locke hears rustling in the reeds and turns his head to look. I half-expected Vincent to come running through the brush, but instead, it was a naked, semi-obscured Desmond. Locke tries to call out to him, but his voice won't come out. He lays back for a moment, then gets up, only a little blood showing on the side and back of his head.

Locke hears a snap overhead. He looks up and Eko's Jesus stick falls out of the tree and hits Locke on the way down. Locke picks it up and the quote "Lift up your eyes and look north" (Jer 13:20) faces us. Several citations face us as well.

The beach. Locke stomps into the encampment and begins tearing down his shelter. Claire and Charlie stand up to watch. Claire asks Charlie when John got back, where he's been, what he's doing, and finishes up by telling Charlie to go find out what's happening. Charlie hasn't said a word, but he does it.

Charlie finds Locke in the framework of the church. Locke can't speak and in telling Charlie who he needs to speak to, they go through an extensive charade game containing a fantastic reference to LOTR when Charlie says, "Trees. Yeah, I've heard they're wonderful conversationalists." Finally, Charlie figures out that Locke needs to talk to the island.

The beach. Locke has a notepad and approaches Charlie. He seems to have a limp. His notepad says, "I need your help." Charlie is surly with him and Locke writes more notes explaining that he needs Charlie to stand guard while he talks to the island at the sweat lodge. Charlie reminds Locke that he detests him.

Backstory. Locke is driving an old pickup down the road with a California plate that reads 5Q49938. (Anyone with better eyesight can clue me in on whether I'm right.) A tarp covers the bed. It starts to rain and Locke picks up a young hitchhiker who says he's on the way to Eureka. Locke says he will get him as far as Bricksville.

The hitchhiker says his name is Eddie and he might be a lumberjack--all he knows is he had to get out of where he was, his mom was dead and his dad's a drunk.

The rain stops and a police car stops the truck. Officer Williams asks Locke what he has in the bed and Locke answers, "Guns and groceries." Locke adds that the registration is in the notebook in the red duffle. Officer Williams opens the notebook and compares the paperwork to Locke's license. The paperwork lists at least three handguns, five Winchester shot guns, and at least four rifles of various makes. Johnathan Locke lives at 25164 Franklin St in San Francisco. He's 5'10" and 175 pounds, male, born 15 November 1946. SSN 553-45-2651. Locke is smug about having all the paperwork, so Officer Williams steps forward and threatens to take him in for picking up a hitchhiker. Eddie steps in says Locke is his uncle and he called him to pick him up.

Island church. Locke is mixing up some hallucinogenic goo and Charlie asks if he is mixing up drugs. "I only ask because of this strict zero tolerance policy you've enacted. I don't want you to have to start punching yourself in the face." Locke writes on the tablet and emphasizes to Charlie that he is not to enter the sweat lodge.

Inside the sweat lodge.
Locke takes some of his hallucinogenic goo and gets the steam rising. Time passes. Locke waits patiently. Charlie paces outside. Boone appears in the sweat lodge next to Locke. Locke becomes emotional, but he still can't speak. He silently apologizes to Boone and Boone sarcastically responds that it's okay, he was the sacrifice the island demanded. Boone tells him he'll get his voice back when he has something worth saying. He tells Locke to come with him, he needs to clean up his own mess, he's the only one who can bring the family back together. Locke finds out he can no longer use his legs. Boone points out the wheelchair in the sweat lodge with them and the scene changes...

Sydney airport. Boone wheels Locke through the airport. "John, someone in this airport is in serious danger and you're the only one who can save them." Locke points to Charlie, Claire, and Aaron, but Boone says, "Not them. They'll be fine...for a while." Locke points to Sun, Jin, and Sayid, but Boone says, "I think Sayid's got it." Locke points to Hurley working behind a ticket counter and inputting the Numbers to a computer, but Boone says, "Not Hurley." Locke points to a very well-dressed pilot,Desmond, who is being followed by several pretty stewardesses. Boone says, "Not him, he's helping himself." Locke sees Kate flirting with Sawyer while waiting to go through a security checkpoint. Jack is behind them and Ben is the security guard waving the wand over them. Locke becomes very agitated, but Boone says, "There's nothing you can for them. Not yet. First, you have to clean up your own mess." Echoes and jumpcuts emphasize the dream feel to this. Suddenly, the airport is empty and Locke is at the bottom of a large staircase. Boone calls to him from the top and Locke pulls his body up the stairs with only his arms. He gets to the top and realizes his hand is in a puddle of dark red blood. Eko's Jesus stick is in front of him and Boone, too, both covered with blood. Boone says, "Clean it up, John. They've got him. You don't have much time."

Locke returns to the sweat lodge and a polar bear with singed fur snarls at him. He launches himself out the door and Charlie stands up, concerned. Locke picks up a knife and turns it back and forth in front of him. A nervous Charlie asks what he is doing.

Eighteen minutes into the show, Locke speaks his first words: "I'm going to save Mr. Eko's life."

Jungle. Locke and Charlie walk slowly through the reeds. Locke finds Eko's cross lying in the reeds and says, "He was dragged this way." "By what?" "Polar bear." "Sawyer killed the polar bear." "He killed a polar bear."

They walk on a bit and see some fresh blood on the ground. Locke tells Charlie to go back to Claire. Charlie says he'll take his chances. "You don't want to go with me, Charlie. Bad things happen to people who hang around with me.

Backstory. The truck enters through a guarded gate. Locke is driving the truck down a lovely dirt road in a parklike setting. It looks like a homey setting, sort of a nature commune, maybe an attempt at utopia (similar to the Dharma Initiative). A sweat lodge sits to one side of a large warehouse. Eddie asks what a sweat lodge is for and Locke explains, "Anyone who wants can go in there and meditate." He tells Eddie to go in there and try it. He will find out what he should do with his life, find out if he is a farmer or a hunter. Eddie asks which he is, but Locke just smiles.

Eddie is wearing a Geronimo Jackson shirt. Too funny. Geronimo Jackson was one of the albums in the hatch.

Locke and Eddie come up to a large table where a number of people are eating. Mike and Jan run the place and welcome Eddie. Eddie says it was one of his dad's old shirts. Mike tells him his dad has great taste.

Locke stands up and says grace.

Jungle. Charlie has decided to stay with Locke. They pause at the side a huge crater. Charlie asks what happened and Locke replies that it looks like it imploded. They walk on and come upon a dead boar, freshly killed. Locke says it's an active kill, which means the bear will be back soon. Locke picks up a bit of fuzz and says, "Alright, polar bear." The polar bear charges from the jungle and chases them a little ways.

Locke and Charlie stop running when they don't hear the bear any more (because anyone can outrun a bear, right???) They hear a rustle in the reeds behind them. Locke pulls his knife and throws it into the bushes, only to find he has hit Hurley's canteen. Hurley looks quite intimidated, since the canteen was at his mouth when the knife hit it.

Jungle. Hurley fills Locke and Charlie in on the plight of Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Locke sends Hurley back to the beach. Charlie fills Hurley in on the bear situation and Hurley gets very nervous as Locke and Charlie walk off into the jungle.

Locke finds more fur and Charlie tells him about when he used to get high and watch nature shows. "Polar bears...are like the Einsteins of the bear community."

They find the bear's den.

Backstory. Locke and Eddie are talking about Lizzie, another member of the commune. Eddie says she wants Locke even though she's half his age because she wants a daddy, like everyone else here. Locke takes offense and Eddie apologizes. They head to the orchard and Eddie asks about the mysterious greenhouse. Eddie points out that everyone is keeping some secret. He says he sees the fertilizer going in to the greenhouse and he wants in on whatever they're going to blow up. Locke laughs and says he'll talk to Mike and Jan.

Jungle. Locke and Charlie are at the entrance to the bear's den. Locke smears mud on himself and makes Eko's Jesus stick into a torch. Charlie says he'll go in there, but Locke tells him to go back. They argue a moment with Charlie insisting he has a right to go in there. Locke goes in by himself. They seem to almost be friends again.

Jungle. Hurley is by himself walking back to the camp and expecting a bear when he hears rustling. "Bear? Is that you?"

Desmond's voice comes out of the growth and asks if he's alone. Hurley says yes and Desmond emerges completely naked. "Whoa, dude. I'm not alone!"

"Beach camp's right over there. can you give me some clothes?"

"What happened to yours"

"I woke up in the jungle like this."

"So, the hatch blew off your underwear."

Desmond loses his temper and walks toward Hurley. "Fine, do you want to discuss this in great detail right now?"

"No, no, no, dude. I got something right here." Hurley hands Desmond a much-too-large tye-died t-shirt.

Bear's den. Locke finds a toy dump truck, badly dented.

Backstory. Locke goes to the greenhouse and tells the guard, Kim, he's looking for Mike and Jan. The guard says they're looking for him. He looks a little tense. Inside Mike and Jan are rushing about, packing money, papers, and pot, while snapping at each other. They tell Locke he really messed up. They tell him that Eddie is really Edward R. Colburn, a brand-new cop from the Humboldt County sheriff's department sent to gather evidence on them. And here's an Easter egg for those interested in these things: Eddie's badge number is 84023. Jan says Eddie was waiting for Locke the day Locke picked him up on the road and has been gathering evidence for six weeks because of Locke. Locke tells him it's not too late, that he can fix this.

Bear's den. This bear sure lives deep inside the cave. Locke finds several bones, including a skeleton wearing Dharma clothes, though no station symbol is evident. Eko is lying nearby unconscious. He comes to for a moment, then the bear drags him behind a rock. Locke rushes forward and tries to pull Eko away from the bear. They struggle and Locke finally uses a can of hairspray as a makeshift flamethrower, singing the bear's face as Locke saw in the sweat lodge. The bear runs away deeper into the cave and Locke takes Eko outside. We hear the bear moaning and growling inside.

They stop outside the bear's den. Charlie and Locke pick up Eko and head into the jungle.

* commercial break *

Jungle. Desmond and Hurley walk through the jungle, while Desmond fills him in on what happened in the final moments of the hatch. Hurley says it seems awfully convenient to have a failsafe key all that time and not use it. Desmond says he didn't know what would happen. He tells Hurley that the failsafe key seems to have detonated the electromagnetic anomaly and made the hatch implode. Hurley replies, "You didn't implode." Desmond just agrees with him. Hurley says, "You're not going to, like, turn into the Hulk or something?"

Desmond and Hurley keep walking and Hurley tells him about the island vibrating and the sky turning purple. "And Kate and Jack and Sawyer saw it too right before they got bags pulled over their heads." Desmond interrupts Hurley and says not to worry, that Locke's going to go after them, he said so in his speech. Hurley is confused and asks what speech, Locke was just going to save Eko and kill bears. Desmond pauses and says he's just shook up.

Jungle. Locke laughs about burning the bear and says he won't be coming after them. They discuss what Locke saw in the sweat lodge and Locke tells Charlie about Boone and cleaning up his own mess.

Backstory. Locke and Eddie are in the woods with rifles. Eddie asks if Locke has talked to Mike and Jan. Locke says, yeah, they'll go after supper. He points to something behind Eddie and Eddie turns. Locke raises his gun to Eddie and asks if he was chosen and why. Eddie says he was chosen and the psych profile said he would be amenable for coercion. Eddie says it's not personal, but Locke clearly thinks it is. Eddie walks away and says Locke won't shoot him, he's a good man, a farmer. This echoes last week, when Colleen said a similar thing to Sun in "The Glass Ballerina". Locke denies this and says he is a hunter, not a farmer. His eyes tear up and Eddie walks off into the woods. Locke lowers his gun after trying to build the courage to shoot Eddie in the back.

Jungle. Locke and Charlie set down Eko and Charlie goes to get water from a nearby stream. Locke speaks to an unconscious Eko and apologizes for destroying the hatch and getting their people captured. He says he could have protected Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Suddenly, Eko's eyes open and he says Locke could still protect them, still save them. He says Locke will find them, after all, "you are a hunter." Charlie returns and Locke tells him Eko is awake, but it seems he was not awake after all. A prophetic vision? Or just aftereffects of the drug?

Beach. Locke and Charlie arrive with Eko and we meet two redshirts, Paolo and Niki. Paolo rushes up to them and takes Eko from Locke. Niki says, "We need Jack." Hurley tells her Jack's not coming back, he's been captured by the Others. Niki becomes angry and asks when Hurley planned to tell them.

Locke gives a speech about finding Jack, Kate, and Sawyer and bringing them home. Hurley realizes this is the speech Desmond referred to earlier in the jungle. He glances over to Desmond throwing rocks into the sea. Desmond seems to have had a flashforward.

Locke assigns people to gather first aid supplies to help Eko. Charlie stands next to Hurley and says, "What a speech," with respect in his voice. He notices Hurley is in shock and Hurley tells him he has just had a deja vu. Charlie says that when he gets over it, could he get some bandages from the kitchen?

The episode ends with a closeup of Hurley looking out at Desmond and looking confused.

Haha! Yes, I'm a fanatic and I analyze (some say overanalyze) everything I can think of. Lost is easy to get hooked on. Thanks for stopping by.

We are definently going to have to discuss this episode in great detail. I'm going to be posting mine a little bit later today. I need to get all the right pics first. I'll wait to discuss anything until I have my post about it up. Just so I can concentrate my thoughts on that, and then commenting on it.

Nobody's commented on the Easter eggs. Am I the only one who cares? (I mean, besides being obviously obsessive about this show, I think the Easter eggs are great fun.)

Adele,
If you go to that website i showed you www.thetailsection.com they have a post about all the easter eggs that were in tonight's episode. You should do a post just on all that. Because there were a ton! What about that crazy toy dump truck in the cave, what the crap?

Yeah, I can't figure that out at all. I've been trying to remember if we've even seen a toy truck in previous episodes.

One thing was those bones really looked small. Could they have been a child? And the truck his toy?

Just got back from the tailsection web site. The only thing they got that I missed was the date on Eddie's license. 6/12/94. That dates Locke's flashback to about ten years before the crash.

I'll take your advice, though, and extract them into one post.
