Further Instructions: Easter Eggs
October 21st 2006 02:31
Every episode of Lost contains Easter eggs, those hidden references, sayings, and pictures that add another dimension to this Lost fanatic's life. "Further Instructions" was no exception. Here are the Easter eggs I found.
Eko's Jesus stick. I wrote a detailed post about Mr. Eko's Jesus stick. The large staff hit Locke on the shoulder as it fell from a tree. When Locke picked it up, he spent several seconds staring at it. "Lift up your eyes and look north" faces the camera square on. Several citations surround the quote. Right above the rope wrapping the handle of the stick, Eko had carved the Numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42.
Charlie and Treebeard. When Locke is trying to pantomime who he needs to talk to, Charlie guesses many things: sand, sky, and so forth. Then he guesses "Trees" and adds, "Yeah, I've heard they're wonderful conversationalists." This reminded me so much of the scene in Lord of the Rings where Pippin tells Merry (Dominic Monaghan, who plays Charlie) "It's talking, Merry. The tree is talking to us."
The gun paperwork. Locke's birthdate is listed as the fifteenth and 15 is one of the Numbers.
Geronimo Jackson. In season two, Hurley and Charlie sat in the hatch discussing the albums (and Libby). Charlie holds a Geronimo Jackson album and says he's never heard of them. Hurley later asks Sayid if he's heard of them and Sayid says he hasn't. In "Further Instructions", the backstory includes a scene where Eddie removes his jacket to reveal his Geronimo Jackson t-shirt.
Eddie's badge number. We see Edward F. Colburn's badge toward the end of the episode. His badge number is 84023, containing three of the Numbers: 4, 8, and 23.
The Pearl station shirt. Not so much an Easter egg as something that was right in the middle of the screen, but here it is anyway. Locke finds a mass of bones deep in the bear's den. One of the skeletons looks human and seems to be wearing a t-shirt with a Pearl station logo on it.
I saw no Easter eggs in the license plate of truck Locke drove or in the serial numbers of the guns on Locke's paperwork. Did I miss any thing? Let me know.

I also thought the exact same thing when Charlie was talking about the trees. I thought it was hilarious.

The producers of Lost said in the first season that time travel was not involved, but without Desmond time traveling, I don't know how his beard could have grown like that.
Another thing I wondered was how he knew about Locke's speech. He wasn't there listening to it, so he couldn't have gone back and forth in time, and he couldn't really be remembering it.
I'm going to write up a post about Desmond and time, but it's still jumbled in my mind. I'm not sure what to make of this twist, although it's my favorite twist of the season (so far).
