Flashes Before Your Eyes

Beach. Desmond is walking out of the jungle and he looks into the distance.
Charlie and Hurley go through Sawyer's stuff. Hurley is reading. Desmond walks up and asks them to come with him. Hurley asks if he found Eko, but Desmond doesn't answer. He leads them into the jungle where Sayid and Locke are waiting. Charlie asks, "What happened?" they fill in some details about Eko's death.
Desmond starts looking around and looking confused. Hurley calls attention to it just as Desmond runs off. Desmond runs to the beach and swims out in the surf. He pulls an unconscious Claire to shore and performs CPR while a concerned Charlie looks on. Claire is revived.
Charlie tries to help repeatedly, but Desmond pushes him away. Charlie shouts after him, "How did you know she was drowning?" Hurley answers, "I'll tell you. That guy...sees the future, dude."

Beach. Desmond is looking at a picture of him and Penny. Claire comes up behind him and asks about her. She says she goes swimming every day and there was an undertow that grabbed her. Charlie comes up behind them and asks where Claire has been, Aaron's starving.
Hurley and Charlie have a plan to get Desmond really drunk and find out how Desmond knew about Claire in the water. Desmond refuses and says he's been drunk too much lately. Charlie starts to walk off and Desmond stops him and asks what kind of whiskey it is. It's McCutcheon and this changes Desmond's mind.
Later that night the three of them are sitting around the campfire very drunk and singing. Hurley asks if they know any songs about drinking, fighting, and girls with one leg. Charlie and Desmond reply together, "Only about girls with one leg with a heart of gold." Charlie suddenly springs the question on him. Desmond tries to brush it off, but Charlie persists.
Desmond starts to walk away, but when Charlie calls him a coward, Desmond returns and tackles Charlie. He strangles him as he yells, "You want to know what happened when I turned that key? You want to know what happened?"
Flashback. Desmond and Locke are in the hatch and the countdown has ended. Desmond goes underneath the floor and turns the key.
He wakes up and is covered with red, a slash on his neck and over his right side, pooling on the floor. It looks like blood, but it turns out it's red paint. He's repainting a room in the apartment because Penny has moved in.
1:08 on the digital clock. Sarah MacLachlan, "Building a Mystery", plays in the background. Penny ties his tie for him. Desmond is going for a job interview. He hears the beeping of the hatch computer and he goes into the kitchen, but it's only the microwave. Penny follows him in and gets a mug out of the microwave and hands it to him.
Desmond arrives at Widmore Industries and talks to the receptionist, who is rather chilly to him. A delivery man walks up and says, "Parcel for 815". Desmond asks him to repeat it. Desmond gives his name as David Hume and goes to speak with Mr. Widmore. A painting on the wall has a polar bear in it and "Namaste" printed backwards in block letters at the top. Desmond was set designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He didn't graduate from college because he had to take care of his three brothers after his father died. No military experience. Desmond remarks on a model boat in the office and Mr. Widmore tells him that his company sponsors a round-the-world boat race.
He offers Desmond a job in the administrative department. Desmond says he actually wants to ask for Penny's hand in marriage. Mr. Widmore looks nonplussed. He offers Desmond a 60 year McCutcheon whiskey, gets two glasses, pours one swallow into one and says the swallow is worth more than Desmond could ever make in one month. He tells him that Desmond is not worthy of Penny or his whiskey.
Desmond leaves and throw his tie in the street. He hears a street musician. It's Charlie and he's singing "Wonderwall" by Oasis. Desmond asks him how he knows him. He sees flashbacks of the hatch. He gets very manic and says he knows his name is Charlie. Charlie replies that that is on the card. It says, "Charlie Hieronymus Pace". Charlie says to the crowd, "This is why we don't do drugs." It starts to rain. Charlie closes up and the crowd disperses.
"...thesis is a bit neat. The wild card, Robby, is unpredictability. Run the same test ten times and you'll get ten different outcomes. It's what makes life so wonderfully chaotic."
Desmond runs into a library, drenched. He stops a friend of his, Donovan, and asks him about time travel. They go to a pub and Desmond tells him the whole story of the island. Donovan is worried and teases him about it. "Make Your Own Music" by Mama Cass comes on the jukebox. Desmond says he remembers this night. He tells Donovan how the soccer match ends and then Jimmy Lannon will hit the bartender with a cricket bat because he owes him money. The soccer match does not end like Desmond remembers it and Donovan tells him that time travel is nearly impossible and so is true love, go marry Penny.
Desmond goes shopping for a diamond ring. The shopkeeper asks his price range. He says he's not a man of means and she says she has just what he needs. The clock behind her says 4:42. She shows him a pear-shaped diamond solitaire. He says he'll take it. The shopkeeper's tone changes and she tells him that he will not take the ring and to give it back. Desmond is confused and asks her what she means. It turns out she knows his name and everything that will happen to him. Last time he was there, he did not buy the ring, he broke Penny's heart, and a few years later he joined the race. If he doesn't do all those things, she says, everyone will die.

The shopkeeper shrugs and says, "You're going to be difficult about this, I see." She invites him to get chestnuts with her. She looks over at a man and says, "That man is wearing red shoes." A scaffolding collapses on the man and all we see are his red sneakers sticking out of the rubble. Desmond is stunned and asks her why she didn't stop it. She says it wouldn't matter. If she warned him today, he would have died tomorrow. If she warned him about tomorrow, he would have died the day after. She insists that "The universe has a way of course-correcting."
"You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond You do it because you're supposed to." Desmond is determined to propose to Penny and change his future. The shopkeeper tells him pushing the button is the only truly great thing he will ever do.
Desmond passes a military recruitment office and pauses, but he continues on. He meets Penny by the Thames. A man calls out and asks if they want their photo taken. He has several backdrops, including the marina scene in the background of his photo.
Penny pays for the photograph. Desmond says he can't continue the relationship. Penny becomes angry. "Don't make this about what I do or don't deserve. Have the decency to admit that you're a coward." Penny walks off when Desmond says they're not supposed to be together.

Desmond walks into a pub. He looks at the bar and sees a McCutcheon, but he orders the cheapest. "Make Your Own Music" comes on the jukebox and the same game from earlier is on the television. He realizes he was right, it was just the wrong night.
The soccer team wins and the thug comes through the door. Desmond calls out to the bartender to duck and the cricket bat swings around and knocks out Desmond.
He wakes up on the island with things from the hatch scattered about. The picture of him and Penny is lying unharmed on the ground. He starts crying that he'll do it right if he can just go back one more time.
The episode moves through scenes to Desmond on top of Charlie. Hurley pulls him off and Desmond cries in the sand. "No matter what you do, you can't change it." Charlie picks him up and helps him back to his tent. Desmond apologizes for strangling him and Charlie apologizes for calling him a coward.
Charlie insists that Desmond tell him what happened. "When I turned that key, my life flashed before my eyes. Then I was back in the jungle, still on this bloody island. But those flashes...didn't stop."
Charlie asks if Desmond saw a flash and ran to save Claire. Desmond answers that he wasn't saving Claire, he was saving Charlie. When he saw the lightning hit the roof, Charlie was electrocuted. When Claire was in the water, Charlie dove in after her and drowned. Desmond says the universe has a way of course-correcting. Not matter what he does, Charlie will die.
