Flashes Before Your Eyes

February 16th 2007 06:14
Beach. Desmond is walking out of the jungle and he looks into the distance.

Charlie and Hurley go through Sawyer's stuff. Hurley is reading. Desmond walks up and asks them to come with him. Hurley asks if he found Eko, but Desmond doesn't answer. He leads them into the jungle where Sayid and Locke are waiting. Charlie asks, "What happened?" they fill in some details about Eko's death.

Desmond starts looking around and looking confused. Hurley calls attention to it just as Desmond runs off. Desmond runs to the beach and swims out in the surf. He pulls an unconscious Claire to shore and performs CPR while a concerned Charlie looks on. Claire is revived.

Charlie tries to help repeatedly, but Desmond pushes him away. Charlie shouts after him, "How did you know she was drowning?" Hurley answers, "I'll tell you. That guy...sees the future, dude."

Beach. Desmond is looking at a picture of him and Penny. Claire comes up behind him and asks about her. She says she goes swimming every day and there was an undertow that grabbed her. Charlie comes up behind them and asks where Claire has been, Aaron's starving.

Hurley and Charlie have a plan to get Desmond really drunk and find out how Desmond knew about Claire in the water. Desmond refuses and says he's been drunk too much lately. Charlie starts to walk off and Desmond stops him and asks what kind of whiskey it is. It's McCutcheon and this changes Desmond's mind.

Later that night the three of them are sitting around the campfire very drunk and singing. Hurley asks if they know any songs about drinking, fighting, and girls with one leg. Charlie and Desmond reply together, "Only about girls with one leg with a heart of gold." Charlie suddenly springs the question on him. Desmond tries to brush it off, but Charlie persists.

Desmond starts to walk away, but when Charlie calls him a coward, Desmond returns and tackles Charlie. He strangles him as he yells, "You want to know what happened when I turned that key? You want to know what happened?"

Flashback. Desmond and Locke are in the hatch and the countdown has ended. Desmond goes underneath the floor and turns the key.

He wakes up and is covered with red, a slash on his neck and over his right side, pooling on the floor. It looks like blood, but it turns out it's red paint. He's repainting a room in the apartment because Penny has moved in.

1:08 on the digital clock. Sarah MacLachlan, "Building a Mystery", plays in the background. Penny ties his tie for him. Desmond is going for a job interview. He hears the beeping of the hatch computer and he goes into the kitchen, but it's only the microwave. Penny follows him in and gets a mug out of the microwave and hands it to him.

Desmond arrives at Widmore Industries and talks to the receptionist, who is rather chilly to him. A delivery man walks up and says, "Parcel for 815". Desmond asks him to repeat it. Desmond gives his name as David Hume and goes to speak with Mr. Widmore. A painting on the wall has a polar bear in it and "Namaste" printed backwards in block letters at the top. Desmond was set designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He didn't graduate from college because he had to take care of his three brothers after his father died. No military experience. Desmond remarks on a model boat in the office and Mr. Widmore tells him that his company sponsors a round-the-world boat race.

He offers Desmond a job in the administrative department. Desmond says he actually wants to ask for Penny's hand in marriage. Mr. Widmore looks nonplussed. He offers Desmond a 60 year McCutcheon whiskey, gets two glasses, pours one swallow into one and says the swallow is worth more than Desmond could ever make in one month. He tells him that Desmond is not worthy of Penny or his whiskey.

Desmond leaves and throw his tie in the street. He hears a street musician. It's Charlie and he's singing "Wonderwall" by Oasis. Desmond asks him how he knows him. He sees flashbacks of the hatch. He gets very manic and says he knows his name is Charlie. Charlie replies that that is on the card. It says, "Charlie Hieronymus Pace". Charlie says to the crowd, "This is why we don't do drugs." It starts to rain. Charlie closes up and the crowd disperses.

"...thesis is a bit neat. The wild card, Robby, is unpredictability. Run the same test ten times and you'll get ten different outcomes. It's what makes life so wonderfully chaotic."

Desmond runs into a library, drenched. He stops a friend of his, Donovan, and asks him about time travel. They go to a pub and Desmond tells him the whole story of the island. Donovan is worried and teases him about it. "Make Your Own Music" by Mama Cass comes on the jukebox. Desmond says he remembers this night. He tells Donovan how the soccer match ends and then Jimmy Lannon will hit the bartender with a cricket bat because he owes him money. The soccer match does not end like Desmond remembers it and Donovan tells him that time travel is nearly impossible and so is true love, go marry Penny.

Desmond goes shopping for a diamond ring. The shopkeeper asks his price range. He says he's not a man of means and she says she has just what he needs. The clock behind her says 4:42. She shows him a pear-shaped diamond solitaire. He says he'll take it. The shopkeeper's tone changes and she tells him that he will not take the ring and to give it back. Desmond is confused and asks her what she means. It turns out she knows his name and everything that will happen to him. Last time he was there, he did not buy the ring, he broke Penny's heart, and a few years later he joined the race. If he doesn't do all those things, she says, everyone will die.

*commercial break* (The first commercial is for a horror movie called "The Number 23".)

The shopkeeper shrugs and says, "You're going to be difficult about this, I see." She invites him to get chestnuts with her. She looks over at a man and says, "That man is wearing red shoes." A scaffolding collapses on the man and all we see are his red sneakers sticking out of the rubble. Desmond is stunned and asks her why she didn't stop it. She says it wouldn't matter. If she warned him today, he would have died tomorrow. If she warned him about tomorrow, he would have died the day after. She insists that "The universe has a way of course-correcting."

"You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond You do it because you're supposed to." Desmond is determined to propose to Penny and change his future. The shopkeeper tells him pushing the button is the only truly great thing he will ever do.

Desmond passes a military recruitment office and pauses, but he continues on. He meets Penny by the Thames. A man calls out and asks if they want their photo taken. He has several backdrops, including the marina scene in the background of his photo.

Penny pays for the photograph. Desmond says he can't continue the relationship. Penny becomes angry. "Don't make this about what I do or don't deserve. Have the decency to admit that you're a coward." Penny walks off when Desmond says they're not supposed to be together.

Desmond walks into a pub. He looks at the bar and sees a McCutcheon, but he orders the cheapest. "Make Your Own Music" comes on the jukebox and the same game from earlier is on the television. He realizes he was right, it was just the wrong night.

The soccer team wins and the thug comes through the door. Desmond calls out to the bartender to duck and the cricket bat swings around and knocks out Desmond.

He wakes up on the island with things from the hatch scattered about. The picture of him and Penny is lying unharmed on the ground. He starts crying that he'll do it right if he can just go back one more time.

The episode moves through scenes to Desmond on top of Charlie. Hurley pulls him off and Desmond cries in the sand. "No matter what you do, you can't change it." Charlie picks him up and helps him back to his tent. Desmond apologizes for strangling him and Charlie apologizes for calling him a coward.

Charlie insists that Desmond tell him what happened. "When I turned that key, my life flashed before my eyes. Then I was back in the jungle, still on this bloody island. But those flashes...didn't stop."

Charlie asks if Desmond saw a flash and ran to save Claire. Desmond answers that he wasn't saving Claire, he was saving Charlie. When he saw the lightning hit the roof, Charlie was electrocuted. When Claire was in the water, Charlie dove in after her and drowned. Desmond says the universe has a way of course-correcting. Not matter what he does, Charlie will die.

Not in Portland Video Recap

February 14th 2007 06:12
Here's a recap for "Not in Portland". The video touches on the salient points of the island story, but leaves out Juliet's rather significant backstory (the focus of the episode).

The most interesting aspect of her character was the transformation from a mouse, who was pushed around by her ex-husband, to a woman willing to kill people--first Ben, then Pickett, maybe others as well that we haven't seen--in order to leave the island. I'm interested in what actually caused that transformation, but I think we won't know for a while, at least.

I pulled the video from YouTube since I am swamped. In other words, somebody else made this video. Hopefully, I'll get back to my regular obsessing this week.

I Do

Kate Room 752
Kate is staying in room 752
Nathan Fillion as Kevin
Officer Kevin
Backstory. The episode opens looking at the back of a woman's dark hair. An elevator door in front of her opens and she steps out into a hall in a hotel. She stops at hotel room 752. "Slowly", sung by Ann-Margret, is playing. She's carrying a red shopping bag with a black box poking out the top. She glances behind her shoulder as she opens the door and we realize it's Kate. She sets the box on the bed and opens it. A wedding veil. She looks uncertain, but she is interrupted by a knock on the door. An authoritative voice tells her it the police and there's a dangerous person in the hotel. She says she's fine, she's alone. He says the criminal could be holding her at gunpoint, making her say that and she has three seconds before he breaks down the door. Kate opens the door and it's a Miami Dade police officer. He says, "You wanna get it on?" They go in the room and the scene changes.

Kate's cage.
Kate wakes up to the sound of Sawyer throwing rocks at the push button in his cage. It keeps repeating, "Warning." Sawyer seems kind of down. Kate asks him for a fish biscuit and he snarks, "You trying to keep me feeling productive?"

Michael Emerson as Ben
Ben is worried
Jack's cell. Ben and Juliet enter the viewing room and Jack is looking at the x-rays. The x-rays are a week old and the tumor is borderline inoperable. At the rate the tumor is growing, the borderline goes away in about one week. Jack asks if the surgical room is ready and well-stocked. Ben tells him whatever he needs, he gets. Jack refuses to do the surgery. Ben is scared, at least he looks scared. He tells Jack he is very disappointed in his decision. Jack says, "Well, Ben, at least you won't have to be disappointed for very long."

Backstory. Kate's hotel room. She's in bed with the police officer, who we learn is Kevin and is her fiance. Their wedding is twelve hours away. The courtship has been short, Kevin says, but he's sure it's real.

Kate's cage.
Danny opens Kate's cage and tells her it's time to work. She refuses to go without Sawyer and insists they're a team. Danny says, "I wouldn't want to break up a team."

Locke Eko Cross
Locke finds Eko's cross
Jungle. Desmond, Locke, Sayid, Nikki, and Paulo stand around Eko's body. Locke picks up Yemi's cross from the growth nearby. Nikki asks what happened and Locke says it must have been a bear. He adds that they'll bury Eko there to spare the beach people another funeral. Locke volunteers to go back to the camp and get some shovels. Sayid says he'll go with him, Locke refuses, Sayid insists.

Sayid Locke
Sayid questions Locke
Sayid asks Locke what really killed Eko. Locke says, "Folks back at the beach call it the monster. I don't really have a name for it. You don't believe in monsters." "I believe in what I can see. But obviously you have. So why don't you tell me what you think it is." "Might be what brought us here." "So you believe that this monster decided that Eko was meant to die." "I believe Eko died for a reason, I just don't know what it is yet." "That why you lied? We're not headed back toward the camp, are we, John?" "Sure we are. Just need to take a little detour first."

Alex slingshot
Alex threatens Danny Pickett with a slingshot
Excavation on Hydra Island. Kate and Sawyer are working when the alarm goes off and a voice repeats, "Compound breached." Danny yells, "Where is she?" and orders Kate and Sawyer to lie down on the ground. Alex rushes in and shoots people with a slingshot. Danny points his gun at her and tells her to calm down. She wants to know where her boyfriend is and she wants to talk to Ben. A large Other grabs her from behind and she tells Kate not to believe anything they tell her. They're going to kill Kate's boyfriend, just like they killed Alex's.

*commercial break*

Excavation. Kate hears Danny and Juliet arguing. Something's been moved up two weeks. Danny protests it and Juliet says it's not her call, it's the way it is. Juliet leaves Danny and walks up to Kate, hands her a bag, and tells her to put it over her head. If she doesn't cooperate, Danny will use it as an excuse to kill Sawyer, but if she cooperates, there's something she can do for them that will save Sawyer's life.

Kate wedding dress
Kate checks her wedding dress
Church. Kate is alone and checking that her attire is perfect. Kevin's mother walks in. She clearly cares about Kate and she gives her a locket that her mother gave her on her wedding day. Kevin has three brothers and no sisters, so Kate is the "daughter" that the locket goes to. But Kate's name is Monica to these people, so we know she's still on the run. Kate puts in and whispers, "It's perfect." as her eyes tear up.

Kate Kevin Wedding
A lovely wedding
Altar. The pastor makes a few remarks about Kevin having been in that church since he was yay-high. He was struck by Monica's honesty and devotion. Kevin had said to him that, with Monica, what you see is what you get. He pronounces them man and wife and they are very happy as they walk down the aisle.

Hallway outside Jack's cell.
Juliet escorts Kate into the viewing room for Jack's cell. Jack is surprised and happy to see her. They both cry. Juliet leaves to give them some privacy, but she goes to the monitor room. Jack asks how Kate is and details about her and Sawyer's captivity. Jack glances at the camera several times during their conversation. When he asks her if they hurt her, she breaks down and cries. Kate tells Jack he has to do the operation or they'll kill Sawyer. Jack gets angry. Kate pleads. Jack says he doesn't believe them. Kate says she has to believe them. He yells to the camera to take Kate back.

Monitor room. Ben and Juliet are watching the monitors. Ben says, "Get her out of there." and Juliet leaves the room.

Marshal Edward Mars
Marshal Mars chats with Kate
Grocery store. Kate has a basket full of groceries. Kevin calls her from his squad car. She's making tacos for dinner. After a brief newlywed conversation, Kate rushes out of the grocery store and to a payphone in the rain. She sets a timer on top of the phone and calls federal marshal Edward Mars. He immediately signals to his partner to trace the call. He tells Kate it's the Feast of the Ascension and that a lot of holy days have come and gone since her last call. She says she doesn't want to run anymore and he asks, "What's his name?" He taunts her for a few moments, then her timer goes off and she hangs up.

Kate's cage. Juliet returns Kate. Sawyer isn't in his cage and Kate asks where he is. Juliet says, "You really care for him, don't you?" She looks sympathetic, but she says, "I'm sorry you couldn't help us, Kate."

Danny returns with Sawyer and shoves him roughly into his cage.

Eko's Jesus Stick
Locke believes in fate, not coincidence
Jungle. Locke speaks a few words at Eko's funeral. He went to fetch the Jesus stick which had fallen out a tree and hit him on the head. He kneels down and starts to pound the staff into the dirt. He says, "Rest in peace, Mr. Eko. Thank you for helping me find my..." He stares at the staff as though suddenly realizing something. The camera focuses on the phrase, "Lift up your eyes and look north."

Sawyer in his cage
Sawyer's fatalism
The cages. Kate tells Sawyer she saw Jack. She relates what Juliet told her and Sawyer says he's glad Jack's not dumb enough to fall for their tricks. He gets angry when Kate says she believes them. Kate climbs out of the cage and breaks the lock off Sawyer's cage. He refuses to run. He tells her they're on an island a couple of miles away from their island. She's mad at him and demands to know why he didn't tell her that. He says he wanted her to believe they had a chance.

They kiss and it quickly turns into an indulgence in the pleasures of the flesh.

Kate makes toast for Kevin
A great way to start your day
Kate and Kevin's home. Kate has made toast with a smiley face in her sunny yellow kitchen. They've been married six months. Kevin gives her two tickets to Costa Rica (Oceanic Airlines, of course). She starts to cry and he asks what's wrong. She says it's because she loves him so much.

Sawyer's cage. Sweaty Kate and Sawyer hold each other in the dark. He asks her if she meant it when she said she loved him, or if she was just trying to get Danny to quit beating him. She doesn't say anything, she just kisses him. He says, "I love you, too."

Jack's cell. He's sleeping on the bare metal table when the speaker crackles on. He goes over to it and asks who it is. Alex's voice comes over the speaker and says, "Try it. The door." Jack opens the door and steps out into the hall. Nobody is around. He finds the monitor room and finds guns, arms himself, then returns to the monitors and sees Sawyer and Kate in each other's arms. He stops to stare at them and Ben walks in behind him.

Ben startles him when he says, "If it helps, I was surprised, too." Jack pulls the gun on him and Ben adds, "If I was a betting man, I'd have picked you." Jack puts the gun down and tells him he'll operate in the morning in exchange for getting him off the island.

Sawyer's cell. The sun is up and Kate and Sawyer are still sleeping.

Kevin Miami Heat t-shirt
It's the Flame station! No, it's the Miami Heat
Kate's home in Miami. She looks at a negative pregnancy test and starts to cry. She carries two glasses into the den where Kevin is working on paperwork regarding a fugitive recovery. Kate asks him, "What if I was a fugitive?" Kevin is not amused at first, but soon realizes she is serious as she tells him more. She says, "I love you, but I can't stay." He realizes something's wrong and she admits that she drugged him so that no one would think he knew anything. He passes out and Kate places the locket in his hand and leaves.

Operations area.
Jack and Juliet are scrubbing in. Jack asks if she will do everything he says when he says it. She says, "You may find this hard to believe, but I've always been very good at following orders." He demands a straight yes before going in with her and she says yes.

Ben looks nervous and he asks Jack if he gets nervous before surgery. Jack says not anymore. Ben says that whatever happens, things will be different and Jack agrees. Ben turns to Juliet and asks if Alex asked about him. Juliet says, "No, we took her home last night. I don't know where she is now." Ben says he's ready and they begin.

As soon as Ben goes under, Danny tells another Other that it's time. He says, "Ben just put his life in the hands of one of them. Shephard wasn't even on Jacob's list."

It's raining outside. Danny tells Sawyer to come with him and Kate steps between them.

The surgery seems to go normally until Jack hesitates for a second, then places one more incision. Ben's blood pressure suddenly starts dropping and Jack demands a radio from Tom, who is outside in the surgical viewing room. Jack has made a small incision in Ben's kidney sac and he has about an hour left.

The cages. Sawyer fights Danny until Danny says he will kill Kate, too, if he doesn't back down. Sawyer lets Danny lead him outside the cage. He kneels execution style and Danny tells Kate to watch, but Sawyer tells Kate to close her eyes. Danny says, "This is for Colleen." He's about to pull the trigger when Tom calls him over the radio and tells him to give his walkie to Kate or Jack will let Ben die.

Danny hands Kate the radio. Jack tells Kate she has an hour head start before they come after her. He asks her if she remembers the story he told her the first day on the beach and when she gets safe, she needs to call him and tell him that story. Kate insists that she can't leave without him and Jack yells at her to run.

And that's the end until February.

Eko on Lost
The backstory revolves around Eko.
Backstory. The episode opens with a young Eko breaking a lock on a storage shed in order to feed his younger brother, Yemi. A sister from the orphanage finds them and takes them to the church to confess. Eko defends his actions by saying Yemi was hungry, but the sister is not interested in his excuses. She says, "You have sinned, Eko. Hunger does not matter. Now go, ask for forgiveness." Eko won't move from the pew. He steps toward the confessional, then turns around to Yemi, who sits frightened in the pew. The sister says sharply, "Confess!" Eko turns to face the confessional, but we don't see him go in.

Beach. Eko is lying unconscious in the tent. Sayid leans over him and asks Hurley how long he has been like this. Hurley says a couple of days. Sayid asks Charlie what happened to him and Charlie answers, "Before or after we saved him from the polar bear cave?" Sayid, Charlie, and Hurley leave the tent and Eko dreams

Every Man For Himself

October 26th 2006 07:08
Sawyer Josh Holloway
The backstory revolves around Sawyer
The sea, then the back of Desmond's head. He seems to have cleaned up. He is sitting on the beach, stroking his beard and watching Claire with Aaron. She is under her shelter. Claire lays Aaron down for a nap. Desmond walks over and interrupts Claire writing in her diary. He tells her she has a problem with her roof, maybe she should move down the beach for the night while he fixes it. Claire declines the offer nicely. Desmond tells her it would be worth it. Charlie calls out, "Whatcha doin', brotha?" in a clear imitation of Desmond. Desmond tells him he wants to fix the roof. Charlie says it's fine and puffs up a bit, says he's handy, he was building a church before Eko blew up. Claire rolls her eyes a bit. Desmond gives in and leaves. Charlie says, "We're going to have to get that guy another button to push."

Desmond Thinking
Desmond is thinking
Jack's cell. Jack is pacing and watching a cartoon on the television Ben brought in last episode. "The Blue Danube" is playing on the cartoon. Someone bangs on the door to his cell and Jack sits in the corner. Juliet comes in with Dharma water and makes small talk. She tells him he seems frustrated. He asks if he's going to watch cartoon all day or is she going to tell him why he's there. Juliet doesn't answer his question, and says instead that she hopes he likes blueberry. She starts to walk away, but Jack says, "Should I talk to Benjamin?" "Sorry?" "should I talk to Benjamin? Because I'm starting to think you're just the person who brings me my food." "You can talk to him all you want. He won't tell you anything." "You work for him." "No, I don't work for him." "He's in charge." "It doesn't work that way around here, Jack. We make decisions together." Right when she says she doesn't answer to Ben, he bursts in and demands her attention. She tries to put him off, but insists. Ben says the sub is back and they have a situation. Juliet follows him out of the cell quickly, but with a glance back at Jack

Locke Episode
The backstory centers on Locke
Locke's eye. He is lying in flattened reeds, his legs at an odd angle. Is he unable to walk again? The camera pans out and it's a bit reminiscent of the pilot episode when Jack wakes up. Locke hears rustling in the reeds and turns his head to look. I half-expected Vincent to come running through the brush, but instead, it was a naked, semi-obscured Desmond. Locke tries to call out to him, but his voice won't come out. He lays back for a moment, then gets up, only a little blood showing on the side and back of his head.

Locke hears a snap overhead. He looks up and Eko's Jesus stick falls out of the tree and hits Locke on the way down. Locke picks it up and the quote "Lift up your eyes and look north" (Jer 13:20) faces us. Several citations face us as well

A Tale of Survival

October 11th 2006 03:10
"A Tale of Survival" recaps the story of the island in chronological order through the first two seasons. It touches on the major mysteries, but does not mention the themes or Easter eggs prevalent in Lost.

This episode starts with a recap of Desmond's arrival on the island and his meeting and subsequent murder of Kelvin. Desmond finds out that the fate of the world--or at least the tidiness of his bunker--truly does rest on his shoulders. He despairs, then hears Locke banging on the hatch
