Lost Fanatic - concerning everything about Lost, the ABC tv drama

A Tale of Survival

October 11th 2006 03:10
"A Tale of Survival" recaps the story of the island in chronological order through the first two seasons. It touches on the major mysteries, but does not mention the themes or Easter eggs prevalent in Lost.

This episode starts with a recap of Desmond's arrival on the island and his meeting and subsequent murder of Kelvin. Desmond finds out that the fate of the world--or at least the tidiness of his bunker--truly does rest on his shoulders. He despairs, then hears Locke banging on the hatch.

The story shifts to flight 815. The survivors of the middle section are shown boarding the plane with the narrator giving a brief background of each. The plane crashes and the contrast of the first forty-eight days on the island between the middle section survivors and the tail section survivors is made clear. The interpersonal struggles of the middle section look childish set next to the kidnappings and murders the tailies have to deal with.

The raft leaves the island with Sawyer, Jin, Michael, and Walt and is intercepted by the Others the first night. Walt is kidnapped by them and the rest wash to shore and meet the tailies, who are living in the Arrow station. The two groups unite at the same time that Michael receives the note on the computer and irrationally dashes off into the jungle to be captured by the Others.

Danielle traps the fake Henry Gale and hands him over to Sayid. Henry Gale is held in the empty armory until the castaways can check out his story.

While waiting, Locke hears a voice over the loudspeaker in the bunker and a countdown. The blast doors shut and Locke lets the fake Henry Gale out of the armory to help him put the numbers into the computer. Locke sees a map on the blast doors. The fake Henry Gale later tells him that he did not push the buttons and nothing happened. Locke begins to doubt the usefulness of the numbers and he draws the map from the blast doors.

Locke and Eko find the Pearl station and Locke finally loses faith in the Swan station, but Eko believes. His words echo Locke's after he first watched the Dharma video: "We're going to have to watch this again."

Michael returns to the group after receiving instructions from the Others to bring the four castaways in exchange for Walt. He kills Ana-Lucia (and Libby, but it wasn't shown) and releases the fake Henry Gale, then gathers the four. Desmond returns during the funeral.

Sayid is convinced Michael is leading them into a trap and he takes Desmond's boat, along with Sun and Jin, to the place Michael said the Others' camp was. It is abandoned.

Back at the bunker, Locke shuts Eko out of the computer room. Desmond talks with Locke more and realizes that he crashed flight 815. Locke still doesn't believe. Eko and Charlie try to break into the computer room with dynamite. The dynamite doesn't work. Metal objects fly across the bunker to the concrete wall hiding the electromagnet. Locke admits he was wrong, then the scene goes to a purple sky.

Meanwhile, the Others have captured Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley. The purple sky and a loud noise halt things for a moment. The Others send Hurley back to the castaways' camp to tell them "never come here". The Others place hoods over Jack, Kate, and Sawyer and Michael drives the boat away from the dock, with Walt aboard.

At the camp, Bernard pushes Claire and Aaron out of the way of the hatch door as it plummets into the middle of the camp. Charlie shows up shortly after and exchanges tender smiles with Claire.

The story arcs outlined in this show are the ones most likely to be advanced during the season. We'll need to keep our eyes on these plots.
